Family islands are a short list. We look for shallow lagoons, beach villas rather than overwater, a real children's club, and a transfer that does not add two hours.

Where we go
Islands with a shallow, sandy lagoon, a children's club that is genuinely good, a house reef that can be snorkelled from the beach, and two-bedroom villas or connecting rooms. Speedboat islands close to Malé are easier with young children than a seaplane after a long flight.
How the week runs
The children swim, snorkel and learn to paddleboard; the adults read and eat. A marine biologist's talk, a sandbank picnic and a night fishing trip are the week's events. Everything is a short walk from the villa and the staff know the children's names by the second day.
Who it suits and when
Families with children of any age, including toddlers, and three-generation groups who want to be together without organising anything. School holidays at Christmas and Easter fall in the dry season; summer holidays are warmer and quieter.
