The ksar of Aït Benhaddou at the edge of the High Atlas, Morocco

North Africa

Morocco

Medina mornings, Atlas air, and a desert night.

Why go

Private Morocco journeys: Marrakech, the High Atlas, and the Sahara, with a private guide, riads, and a plan that leaves time for the souk.

Morocco is close enough for a week and far enough to feel like a journey. We start in Marrakech with a guide who can read the medina, then go up into the Atlas for air and walking.

The desert is a night or two, not a week. A private camp, a long sunset, and the quiet are what people remember.

Morocco is close, varied and welcoming, which is why we recommend it for a first private journey as readily as for a tenth. A courtyard house in the Marrakech medina, a kasbah in the High Atlas and a tented camp in the dunes are a day's drive from one another and feel like three countries.

Spring and autumn are the comfortable seasons. In summer we move you to the coast or the mountains in the middle of the day; in winter the desert nights are cold but the light is extraordinary.

Best time
March to May and September to November. Winter is good for the city and the desert; summer is for the coast and the mountains.

Questions about Morocco

How many nights?

Seven to ten covers the city, the mountains, and a desert night without rushing.

Is it good for families?

Yes. Riads with pools, camel rides, and walking with mules keep children interested.

How do we combine the cities and the desert?

Marrakech first, then over the High Atlas by road to the Sahara with a night or two in a private camp, returning via a Kasbah stay. Fez can be added by a short flight or a long drive.

When is Morocco too hot?

July and August in Marrakech and the south. Spring and autumn are ideal; winter is excellent for the desert and the cities, with cool nights.
