Where we go
A private island resort, chosen for the lagoon, the house reef, the villa design and the transfer, in that order. The northern and southern atolls differ in diving, in distance from Malé and in the number of other guests. Villas over the water or on the beach, with a pool, suit different parties and we say which.
How the week runs
Seaplane or speedboat from the airport, then almost nothing by design: swimming, snorkelling, diving, a dhoni sunset cruise, a spa afternoon. Dinner is on the sand or in the villa. The week is as slow as you make it. Seven nights is the natural length; five works after a safari or Sri Lanka.
Who it suits and when
Couples, honeymooners, and anyone finishing a busier trip. December to April is the dry season with the calmest seas; the rest of the year is warmer, greener and better value, with short showers rather than days of rain.
