Oman for two

Mountains, wadis, and a coast that is still quiet.

Oman is the quiet alternative in the Gulf: cool mountain air, green wadis, a night in the sand, and a coast with turtles and almost nobody else.

Seven nights with a private guide from November to March.

Where we go

Muscat for the old port, the mosque and the souk; the Hajar mountains and Jebel Akhdar for canyon-edge lodges and cool air; the Wahiba Sands for a night in the dunes; the coast for turtles, dhows and empty beaches. Oman is Arabia without the skyscrapers.

How the week runs

A private driver and vehicle through landscapes that need one: mountain roads, wadis with pools to swim in, forts and villages. Two nights in the mountains, two in the desert, two or three by the sea, with Muscat to start. Dinner on a terrace with the stars out is most evenings.

Who it suits and when

Couples who want adventure with comfort, honeymooners who want something other than a beach, and anyone who has been to the Gulf and wants the opposite. October to April for comfortable temperatures; the mountains stay pleasant into early summer.

Best time
October to April. Summer is very hot except in the mountains.
