Oman for families

Wadis to swim in, dunes, turtles on the beach and a safe, welcoming coast, with distances kept short.

Oman is a quietly brilliant family destination: safe, uncrowded and varied, with a coast, mountains and desert within a few hours of Muscat. Children swim in wadis, sleep in the dunes and watch turtles come ashore at night.

Tell us the ages and the half term. We keep the drives short and the days varied.

Where we go

Two or three nights in Muscat for the souq, the fort and a boat trip for dolphins; a mountain camp on the Jebel Akhdar plateau for cooler air and walks; a night in the Wahiba Sands; and a beach stay on the coast near Ras al Jinz for the turtles.

How the week runs

A private driver and guide throughout, with legs of two to three hours. Mornings for the wadi or the fort, afternoons for the pool, evenings early. The desert night and the turtle beach are the two moments children talk about afterwards.

Who it suits and when

Families with children from about five. October to April; the summer is very hot on the coast, though the Dhofar monsoon makes the far south green in July and August.

Best time
October to April. Summer is very hot except in the mountains.
Suits
Families with children of mixed ages · Grandparents travelling with the whole family · First long-haul trips with young children
