Oman private journeys
Muscat, the Jebel Akhdar, the Wahiba Sands and the coast, with a private driver and short legs.
Oman is a private journey in the old sense: a country best seen with a good driver, a guide who knows the forts and the wadis, and a route that moves through mountains, desert and coast in a week. It is uncrowded and quietly luxurious.
Tell us how many nights and whether the far south at Salalah belongs in the plan. Seven to ten covers the north.
Where we go
Muscat for the Grand Mosque, the souq and the coast; the Jebel Akhdar plateau for cooler air and terraced villages; Nizwa for the fort and the Friday market; the Wahiba Sands for a night in the dunes; the coast near Sur for turtles and dhows.
How the week runs
A private driver and guide throughout with legs of two to three hours. Early mornings for the forts and the wadis, long lunches, afternoons at the pool. The desert night and the mountain plateau are the two changes of air.
Who it suits and when
Couples, friends and families with older children who want culture and landscape without crowds. October to April; the Dhofar monsoon makes the far south green in July and August.
- Best time
- October to April. Summer is very hot except in the mountains.
- Suits
- Travellers who want a guide rather than a group · Culture-led trips with time for food and walking · Return visitors who have done the obvious route
