Argentina is a country of regions, each a journey in itself. A private route links the capital, the far south and one more: wine in Mendoza, the falls at Iguazú, the north-west's canyons. Flights do the distances; guides make each place legible.

Tell us how long you have and which third region appeals. Twelve to sixteen nights is right.

Where we go

Buenos Aires for three nights of tango, steak and the barrios; Patagonia for the glacier, the walks and an estancia; Mendoza for the vineyards or Iguazú for the falls. Salta and the north-west for a party that wants somewhere fewer people go.

How the week runs

A private guide in each region and a driver where it helps. Two to four nights in each place with flights between, timed to avoid early starts. Estancia days, a cooking class, a vineyard lunch and a glacier walk give each region its own shape.

Who it suits and when

Couples, friends and families with older children. October to April for Patagonia; Mendoza is good all year and at harvest in March; Iguazú is hot and green in summer.

Best time
November to March for Patagonia. Mendoza and Buenos Aires are good most of the year.
Suits
Travellers who want a guide rather than a group · Culture-led trips with time for food and walking · Return visitors who have done the obvious route
