The best luxury cruises for grandparents and grandchildren

Which luxury cruise lines actually work when grandparents take the grandchildren: the ships with children's programmes and connecting suites, the ones to avoid, and how we would plan it.

The best luxury cruise for grandparents and grandchildren is one where both generations have a good week, which rules out more ships than people expect. Several luxury lines are adults-only. Several more welcome children in theory and have nothing for them in practice. The lines below are the ones we would actually consider.

CriterionExplora JourneysThe Ritz-Carlton Yacht CollectionUniworld Boutique River CruisesPonantRegent Seven Seas Cruises
Explora JourneysChildren's and teen spaces, connecting suites, relaxed. Our first call for young grandchildren.
Ritz-Carlton Yacht CollectionA yacht with a children's programme and a marina. Small parties, higher budget.
Uniworld family sailingsRiver: no sea days, short walks, activities for children on dedicated departures. Excellent for mobility concerns.
Ponant in summerSmall French ships with a kids' club on selected sailings. Adventurous grandparents.
Regent Seven SeasTeenagers in school holidays; included excursions in Alaska or Greece.
AvoidViking (adults-only); Seabourn, Oceania, Scenic Eclipse (no children's facilities) unless the grandchildren are adults.

Stars are Blackbury's editorial opinion, not independent ratings or customer reviews.

For grandchildren under ten, we would start with Explora in the Mediterranean or Caribbean, or a Uniworld family departure on the Danube. For teenagers, Regent in Alaska or the Greek islands, or a Silversea or Ponant expedition. For a yacht, Ritz-Carlton, budget permitting.

The plan matters as much as the ship: a hotel night before boarding, suites that connect or sit side by side, private excursions with a vehicle so nobody is left on the quay, and a table for the family each evening booked before anyone boards.

Good to know

Questions, answered

Can grandparents and grandchildren share a cabin?

Most luxury suites sleep two or three; some family suites sleep four. Connecting suites are usually the better answer and sell first.

Is a river cruise or an ocean cruise better for grandparents with grandchildren?

River on a dedicated family departure for younger children and anyone with mobility concerns; ocean for teenagers and for warm-water swimming.
