Planning figure per person for the cruise itself. Final price depends on sailing date, suite and availability; flights, hotels and transfers are added in your proposal.

A seven-night Regent Seven Seas Explorer cruise from Vancouver to Seward through the Inside Passage, extended with Vancouver and the Rockies by rail, for grandparents taking teenage grandchildren on the trip of a lifetime.

Alaska is where Regent's included excursions earn their keep: flightseeing, whale-watching and glacier walks cost hundreds of pounds per person on other lines and are in the fare here. For a grandparent taking two teenagers, that changes the economics of the trip.

We rarely send anyone to Alaska for the cruise alone. Add Vancouver before and the Rocky Mountaineer to Banff after, and the week at sea becomes a fortnight the family will remember.

Why we like it

  • Flightseeing, whale-watching and glacier excursions included
  • All-suite ship with an elegant, unhurried feel
  • Hubbard Glacier day from the deck
  • A youth programme on summer sailings for teenagers
  • Easy extension by rail to the Rockies

The ship

Seven Seas Explorer, in service since 2016, carries around 750 guests in all-suite, all-balcony accommodation and remains one of Regent's most admired ships: a lot of marble, several speciality restaurants, a large spa and an atmosphere that is elegant without being stiff.

Cabins we'd recommend

  • Two Concierge suites side by side for a grandparent and two teenagers
  • A Penthouse suite for the hosting couple
  • Midship and higher for the glacier views

What the fare includes with Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Everything else, flights, hotels before and after, transfers and private days ashore, we add around it. More on Regent Seven Seas Cruises →

Good to know

Questions, answered

Is Alaska suitable for children?

Teenagers, very much so: whales, glaciers, float planes. For under-tens the days can be long and the weather cool; we often suggest the Mediterranean first.
