A seventieth birthday with the whole family in one place is a logistics exercise before it is a party. A ship solves most of it. Everyone sleeps in the same building, eats at the same table if they want to, and wakes up somewhere new without a single car journey. The occasion gets to be the point.

What a ship does well

A private dinner for twelve on the night itself, in a room the ship sets aside. A table that is yours for the week so the party keeps finding each other. A suite with a veranda large enough for drinks before dinner. A private excursion on the day, with a guide who knows it is a celebration. Flowers, a particular wine, a cake that is not a slab. All of this is normal for the lines we work with, if someone asks in advance.

The ships we would choose

For couples marking an anniversary, the yacht-scale ships from the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection and Four Seasons Yachts and the smaller Silversea and Seabourn ships have the intimacy and the staff ratios that make a quiet occasion feel looked after. For a family gathering across generations we lean towards Explora Journeys and Regent Seven Seas, which have the suites, the restaurants and the room to seat everyone together without taking over the ship.

Timing it

Build the sailing around the date, not the other way round, and give yourself a buffer: a night in the embarkation city before the ship means a delayed flight does not land anyone in the middle of the celebration dinner. For a date in school holidays, start a year ahead; the suites a party like this needs sell first.

What to tell us

Whose occasion it is, who is coming, who must not find out, and what would make the evening feel right. We handle the rest with the ship directly: the dinner, the table, the cabin arrangements, the flights from each household's city, and the hotel nights either side.

What we do not do

We do not promise what a ship cannot deliver. If a particular request is not possible on the vessel you have in mind, we will say so and suggest the ship where it is.
